So, you know I got an HD-DVD drive for my 360 for Christmas? It's very impressive. I love the whole HD format, and I'm pretty good at guessing which formats will survive. There's just no way I'd get stuck with a betamax....
I'm really impressed that Toshiba have officially announced they will be dropping HD-DVD as of March 2008, thus bringing an end to the format war with Blu-Ray. This decision spells worldwide end to development of all HD-DVD devices for PCs and games. I'm a little disappointed that it’s come to this.
I am a bit of an early adopter, and I like the odd game and movie (yes I have a stupidly large DVD collection), but I do think that large payouts from Sony had a larger impact on the outcome of this format war than technical considerations. Having said that, technically the two formats were very similar, and I have a sneeking suspicion that the reason blu-ray won was that it has a far cooler name.....
I have bought about two or three movies on HD, and I have about five free movies, but in fairness, it's dead technology. But my prediction stands, both formats will fail. Downloading is the content distribution model of the future, and any victory that Blu-Ray enjoys will be transient.
And before anyone calls me a Sony-hater, I'd like to point out I will be buying a PS-3 later this year, just as soon as GT-5 is available.

Now, the early '80s had their fair share of bloody awful cars, but the DMC-12 was particularly awful.It weighed slightly more than your average Sun (useful if you lost it in a car park, just chuck a ball on the ground and it'll roll towards it), and had the power output of my cat Jarvis.
Thus it didn't perform as we would understand it (0-60 measured at 10.5 seconds by a car mag of the time), but this is not necessarily a negative, as due to American regulations, the front ride height had been stuffed around at a late stage of development, which meant the car couldn't go around corners at anything above walking pace.
This was a horrible, horrible car. Don't make it worse by making it again.

Well, lets discuss which is the best console between the PS3 and the 360 then shall we?
The Nintendo Wii. Look it is underpowered, has no high def and has a really stupid name, but it does have nunchuks. This means it is cool.

Top Gear was excellent, particularly as they seemed to have annoyed the beardy vegetarian dolphin huggers with their comments on speed.
After seeing the accident, I am amazed that Hamster has made a recovery at all. Reminded me of the infamous Donald Campbell crash on Coniston back in 1967. One very lucky Hamster.
Alistair is better, Juliet is sleeping through the night. Sorry for worrying people in my previous (deleted) blog entry, it wasn't meant as anything more than a place-marker for me. Everything is fine, more than fine in fact.
I'll be back to regular blogging from now on, and it will be an interesting read in the coming months.

Allow me to retort.
No, I’ll admit that Ecclestone didn’t
have a soppy half romance with Rose, but Tennant did not get all
upset and beardy about getting type-cast and run off to ITV to get
involved in some travesty which will, and I quote “take liberties
with the original” version of The Prisoner, and to cap it all which
doesn’t even have Portmeirion in it.
What has Tennant done? Casanova, Blackpool even Harry Potter, all top quality decent stuff that doesn’t
piss me off by raping my memories of a classic original. I agree that
Ecclestone was a great Doctor, but he didn’t stay, he left just
when he was getting good. The Empty Child, The Doctor Dances, Dalek,
The Long Game, Bad Wolf and The Parting of the Ways were all
excellent episodes from a generally good series, but I think that,
overall, series two was stronger. Tooth and Claw, School Reunion, the
Girl in the Fireplace, Rise of the Cybermen, Age of Steel, Impossible
Planet, Satan Pit, Army of Ghosts and especially Doomsday were superb
science fiction television. Series two forced me to re-consider what
my favourite sci-fi TV show was, it used to be Star Trek in its
various forms, but now it’s the Doctor and its Tennant that made
the difference for me. As I say, it’s close but Tennant wins.
I like Torchwood, but we still need more Jack in it, less gap toothed Welsh bint. Every time she nearly gets nailed by a car, my heart leaps and then sinks.
I am very glad that I will be able to watch the runaway Bride live on BBC at Christmas. So I just need to get to a house with a decent TV and bring on the drizzle…..

When the first white settlers came to Australia, they saw these enormous jumping things bouncing around and asked the local aboriginals what they were, the aboriginals responded "I don't know" and thus Kangaroo means, in the local dialect, "I don't know"......
This is rubbish, of course.
Back in the 18th century, there were over 700 aboriginal tribes speaking over 250 distinct languages. Kangaroo is a Guugu Yimithirr word for a Kangaroo. Guugu Yimithirr is the language of the aboriginals who lived around Botany Bay, first encountered on the Cook expedition of 1770.
When the first English settlers arrived 18 years later they went to different part of Australia and wandered around proudly using the word Kangaroo. Trouble is, the local aboriginals didn't know what they meant, speaking the Buganditj language, and so assumed that it meant an animal they had never seen before, so when they first saw a horse, the reasoned that it must be one of those strange kangaroo things the white fellas had been banging on about.
So Kangaroo means Horse.
N.B. When I started to write this blog entry, I was painfully reminded that I can't actually spell 'aboriginal', and had to do a search on Wiki to get the correct spelling. I would like to point out that Queensland Health spent quite a bit of money providing me with "Cultural Awareness Training" or CAT as they like to call it. It didn't work, did it?
Come to think of it, neither did the Code Of Conduct training, which they don't refer to as COC, mysteriously.....
